What’s Your Kampong Gelam Story? Public Engagement (2017)
Objective: Alongside the team at Participate in Design (P!D), Zafir Shamsulbahri and I designed public engagement materials that would interest passers-by and allow participants to share their memories with ease.
About the Project: In the process of building new heritage markers for Kampong Gelam, the Muslim center of Singapore, the public was invited to share their personal stories from the area. The new markers would be inspired by these memories and would display information from those who lived, worked, shopped, and dined in the area rather than sharing the typical textbook-sourced content. This project was initiated by the Malay Heritage Foundation (Warisan SG) and organized by Participate in Design with the support of D2 Architects.

Passers-by stop to sharing their memories of the neighborhood during a festival.
The pop-up shared personal stories and historic photos from the area, and then invited participants to share their own stories and mark the location on the map.
Stories were shared by those who had been familiar with the area for decades and by those who were visiting for the first time.
After the pop-up event, the pop-up stayed on the temporary wall for months, inviting more of the public to participate.
